Find out why the man bun is here to stay.

Is the Man Bun Still a Thing?

Some hairstyle trends come and go while others turn into timeless looks that evolve as people find new ways to get creative with the style. This is certainly true of the man bun, which was a prominently talked-about style phenomenon in the mid-2010s. While much of the hype around this hairstyle may seem like old news, there’s no question that this look is here to stay.

What Is a Man Bun?

Medium-long to long hairstyles for men have always gone in and out of style, but the man bun found a way to make the long hairstyle feel less intimidating and more approachable. The look is very simple: Take the time to grow out your hair to around shoulder length and tie it up in the back into a bun.

The style has plenty of benefits. You can always let your hair hang loose or tie it up for a more professional, put together look. Overall, it’s a style that manages to evoke a certain sensitivity and artistic feel while projecting undeniable confidence.

Modern Man-Buns

While the man-bun was a prominent trend years ago, it only seemed to have one dimension to it. That is, once men grew their hair out enough to achieve the look, they were content to simply hop on the trend and tie their hair back the same way everyone else was.

Some guys have abandoned their buns, but others have taken the style to new levels. Here are great examples of modern ways to rock a stylish man-bun:

  • Half bun: For guys who are still growing out their hair, or who want to more casually wear their hair, a half bun is a great option. By simply pulling the top of your back and letting the lower half hang down, the look becomes something totally new.
  • Mini man bun: Another fun look while your hair is still growing out, the mini man-bun feels effortlessly suave and handsomely casual.
  • Man bun with shaved sides: Asking your barber to add a tight fade or to shave the sides adds a whole new dimension to this already bold and confident look. This is just a small sample of the fun ways you can make a man bun your own!

Taking Care of a Man Bun

Obviously, the process of growing out your hair to create a bun will require you to take good care of your hair in the process. Make sure you shampoo your hair with lukewarm water to prevent dryness and use conditioner to provide your hair with essential nutrients.

Pat dry gently and avoid brushing while wet to avoid hair loss. Don’t try to tie up your hair before it gets long enough; you’ll want to keep your hair fairly loose to avoid damage to your hair or scalp. Once you have your bun, be sure to routinely let it down to take some pressure off of your hair.
