Hairstylists Are Business Owners Too

Working as a hairstylist is too often viewed as merely working for a salon or barbershop. In reality, every hairstylist effectively has their own business, even if they work within a corporate structure. And by treating your job as its own unique business, you’ll find more joy and success while on the job.

Building Your Own Clientele

During every visit with a new client, your goal should be just as much about building rapport as it is giving them a stellar look. Make the effort to get to know them, joke around, and make them feel comfortable during the whole process. Of course, going above and beyond to give them a great haircut and to provide styling and hair-care tips will also make the experience memorable.

After wrapping up, don’t forget to offer your business card, and don’t be afraid to be direct and invite them to see you next time they need a haircut.

Set Specific Goals

One essential aspect of owning a business is setting goals and creating a plan to reach those goals. Come up with a number you hope to earn each month and generate a solid action plan to meet or exceed that amount. You can factor in your regular clients you already see, but also make it your goal to earn new clients and higher tips.

Part of setting your goal will include defining your ideal clients and aiming to get more of them. For instance, if you find that you are particularly good with kids’ haircuts and the moms give you great tips, then prioritize earning those types of clients.

Creating Your Own Business Within Sports Clips

As a hairstylist, you may think working for a franchise like Sports Clips means your chance to own your business will have to wait. But since each shop is independently owned, you have the freedom to build your own client list while still seeing new clients coming in for the first time. And since you have the support of a larger corporate entity, you can be confident the shop your clients walk into will always be well-equipped and maintained.
